Montenegro - Adriatic Sea

The Adriatic Sea (138,000 km²) is a part (gulf) of the Mediterranean Sea. It is located on the northwest southeast from the Otrant Gate to the Trieste Gulf, between the Balkan and the Apennine Peninsulas. The part of the Adriatic Sea that belongs to Montenegro extends from Prevlaka (Cape Ostro) to the delta of Bojana River (293km). It includes the inner waters of the Boka Kotorska Gulf and the territorial waters of the Montenegro seaside (11km from the shore to the open sea). Out of this border there are the international waters.
The Adriatic Sea Shore
By selective wave activity, at places of less resistant rocks, gulfs and beaches are formed. On the contrary, at places with more resistant rocks (lime), peninsulas are formed with outstanding rocky capes. The seaside region of Montenegro has very attractive areas and well known tourist places in the whole of the Adriatic. The most outstanding tourist areas in this part of Montenegro are the following Riviera: Herceg Novi, Kotor, Tivat, Budva, Bar and Ulcinj.

Herceg Novi Riviera

Entering the Boka Kotorska Gulf, on its left shore, from Ostro Cape, Herceg Novi Riviera is formed, which is 21km long and spreads through the narrowest part of the Verige gorge near Kamenari. Also, across the Herceg Novi Gulf there is the largest part of the neighboring shore of the Lustica peninsula, which is also the part of the Herceg Novi Riviera. The first smaller tourist settlement of the left shore of the Herceg Novi Gulf is Njivice, a typical seaside settlement with a small and clear beach and crystal clear water. The road further leads to Igalo. Igalo is a well know rehabilitation centre of the north-west shore of the Topla Gulf (part of the Herceg Novi Gulf), in Boka Kotorska, in the foothills of Dobrostica. It has a beach 2km long. Nearby the delta of Sutorina there are springs with lightly radioactive mineral water.
The sea bed around Igalo is covered with sand and healing mud used for treating rheumatism. Herceg Novi is the largest city entering the Boka Kotorska Gulf.

Budva
As the centre of the Budva Riviera, Budva represents the most developed economic centre, port and the place where road from Cetinje reaches the Adriatic highway. From ages ago it was very attractive for settlers, because of its location on the shore of a gulf, protected from cold north winds. Old Budva, a fortress city of rich past, was built next to the shore on small peninsula, which was developed by connecting the sand atolls with mainland. Today Budva is a modern tourist city with about 12,000 inhabitants. Surrounded by ancient walls, Budva successfully preserved numerous cultural and historic valuables, popular among the tourists. Within the old city there are numerous objects: a few towers, a watchtower, bastion, passes and steps.

Ulcinj Riviera

Ulcinj Riviera is at the most southern part of the Montenegro seaside. It starts at Busat and ends with Ada Island and Bojana River, which borders with Albania. From Busat to Ulcinj the shore is indented by numerous shallow gorges, gulfs and rounded capes of steep rocky sides, rising from the sea. Beaches are mostly pebble and situated in gorges, well protected and difficult to reach. The seaside is overgrown by low conifer forests. Ulcinj is a city and a port south-east of Bar. It is located between the elevations Bijela Gora (289m) and Pinjece (108m); it is built amphitheatrically around the port, below the old part of the city with Turkish ramparts and towers. Of the 32.7km of the Ulcinj coast, 18.1km is suitable for swimming and sunbathing.
